Keep a gas heating option

Dual fuel changes how the house is heated without requiring every gas appliance to change.

Read it as one system

A dual-fuel arrangement uses a heat pump and a gas furnace with the home’s air-distribution system. The indoor coil, blower, outdoor unit and thermostat or other controls have to operate as an identified combination. The words “keep the furnace” do not establish that the existing furnace and blower suit the proposed coil and outdoor equipment.

Ask the proposal to name every retained and new component by model. It should also explain any sheet-metal transition, filter change, refrigerant route, electrical work and thermostat change.

Ask who heats the house under each condition

Controls determine when the heat pump operates and when the furnace takes over. Ask which setting or logic governs that transition, who configures it and how the homeowner can tell which heat source is running. Avoid treating one outdoor temperature as a universal answer; the house load, equipment performance and control design matter.

Inspect the retained furnace

Retaining equipment is a technical and condition decision. Record the furnace model, service access, venting, filter arrangement and visible duct connections. Existing comfort problems should also enter the assessment because a new outdoor unit does not automatically correct restricted airflow or an underserved room.
